Phonics Products and the Self Assessment Process

Phonics products and the self assessment process.

Core criteria

To help schools and Early Years settings to choose an effective phonics teaching programme, the Department has provided a set of core criteria that define the key features of an effective systematic synthetic phonics teaching programme.

The core criteria are accompanied by explanatory notes which are designed to help understand and apply the criteria. Schools and Early Years settings should assess their phonics teaching requirements and ensure that they have an effective phonics support programme in place.

Publishers’ self-assessments

The Government is keen to promote high quality teaching of systematic synthetic phonics in primary schools.

A new list of publishers and their self-assessments evaluated against the revised core criteria has now been added.

Publishers of products can submit self-assessments and their products to be reviewed against the core criteria by independent evaluators. These publishers should contact the phonics mailbox to request a self-assessment form. They will then need to return the self-assessment form together with two copies of their product.

The list of self-assessed products

Below is a list of publishers and their products whose self-assessments have been reviewed by independent evaluators and which meet the Department’s core criteria.

All self-assessments that appear on the site have been scrutinised by independent evaluators to make sure they provide an accurate reflection of the products they represent. Settings and schools should note that this does not constitute an endorsement of the products themselves and should not be regarded as a list of approved programmes or resources. We expect schools considering buying these products to make their own judgement as to whether they are suitable.

The Department does not endorse, rank or otherwise prioritise the publishers or programmes that appear on this site.
